OnePlus has once again made headlines with its latest flagship, the OnePlus 6. Announced just half a year after the OnePlus 5T, the OnePlus 6 improves in a number of areas and that too for only a slightly higher price. OnePlus 6 gets its edge over the competition with its roughly 70k price tag, all the while bringing everything to the table that the other flagships do.

Design

From the OnePlus5 to the 5T we saw OnePlus embrace the tall 18:9 displays, and we appreciated that. However, it seems with the OnePlus 6, another fad has been adopted that is either a hit or a miss for consumers: the notch. Yes, that’s right, the OnePlus 6 now has a slightly larger screen with a notch at the top. It’s not as prominent as the iPhone X’s notch, so we it doesn’t bother us as much.

Another update with the OnePlus 6 is that now it sports a glass back instead of a metal one. Unfortunately, there’s no wireless charging as the glass back normally implies. It definitely feels nice in the hand but it’s much more prone to slipping now. Lastly, the positioning of the camera module has been shifted from a horizontal alignment in the top left corner to a vertical setup towards the middle.

Display

As we mentioned above, the display of the OnePlus 6 is larger than the OnePlus 5T and has a notch. To be specific, the screen is now 6.28-inches, up from 6.01-inch. The resolution has also gotten a bump. No, it’s not QuadHD, but FHD+. To be fair, QuadHD displays are overkill and drain the battery more than anything. Besides, with a pixel density of 402ppi, you’re not really loosing anything.

Cameras

The cameras on the OnePlus 6 have been improved, but not in terms of megapixel count. No, in that department we still have a front facing single 16MP shooter and a 20+16MP combo on the back. The front sensor is a bit larger now, 1/3” or 25mm up from a 20mm sensor from the 5T. The main dual camera module is also just a tad bit larger than last year’s model. The primary sensor in the setup now also comes equipped with OIS for less blurry pics and videos, in addition to phase detection auto-focus.

Video recording maxes out at 4k resolution at 60 frames per second. The OnePlus 6 can also record in slow motion up to 480 frames per second, but at 480p quality.

Hardware

The hardware on OnePlus devices is what never fails to impress us. Packing everything you’d find in flagships double the price, the OnePlus 6 is no slouch by any means. Under the hood we have the fastest processor on the market, the Snapdragon 845. To keep this beast of a chipset company there are 6/8GB of RAM available and storage options go from 64GB to 256GB. The battery in the OnePlus 6 is a 3300mAh cell which should last you close to a day on moderate usage thanks to the FHD+ display.

Finally, the OnePlus 6 ships with Android 8.1 Oreo but is getting a quick update to Android 9.0 Pie. This is a big plus in contrast to other OEM’s which have immense trouble in updating their products in time.

• Nothing that you can criticize about this phone really, given its excellent price point.
