Highlights

Huawei has shown its muscle in the upper price bracket through the development of some smartphones such as the Mate8 and Honor 7. While we’re totally convinced with its capabilities at that level, it has also done commendably well in the lower end with some nice releases such as the Honor C3 etc as well. The Ascend and Honor series both provide the backbone for lower end Huawei smartphones and one of the not so old additions to this category of smartphones is the Ascend Y550.

The Ascend series has focussed mainly on producing smartphones that are somewhat identical to the Ascend Y550. Some of the words that symbolize the Ascend brand is affordability, value for money, uncompromising specifications and utility. The Ascend Y550 is not the perfect definition of the aforementioned qualities but is good enough in some aspects.

Competed by phones such as Ascend Y330, Samsung Galaxy J1 and QMobile M350, the Ascend Y330 belongs to the category of smartphones that is already well saturated. Choosing a phone mostly comes down to the personal choice of a user in this range as the display, processors, cameras etc. all are very similar to one another. The Y330’s display has a good size at 4.5 inches and the IPS LCD is already well documented in most of Huawei’s devices.

The processing power is fueled by a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 processor backed up by 1GB of RAM. 1GB of RAM is good news in this case as some smartphones do tend to be foolish enough to offer just 512MB of RAM in these prices. However, you cannot expect lag free smartphones in this amount of money but the Y550 will probably do fine for you. The cameras weigh in at 5 megapixels for the primary and 2 megapixels for the secondary. They should do enough, if not very well.

The internal storage stands at 4GB which is OK but it can be expanded to 32 gigs via the memory card slot. The removable Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery is also one of its nicer traits as it allows you to replace a degraded battery.

With that, we reach the end of our reviewing of the Huawei Ascend Y550. As mentioned before, it is only a matter of personal choices when it comes to selecting smartphones in this price. The Ascend Y550 has presented its case above which is satisfactory for a phone in these ranges. The choice is yours.
