Galaxy J2 vs J2 2016

2016 has seen Samsung go all out in its attempts to regain its throne. Not only has it excelled in making better flagships, we’re looking at some delicious releases that are thoroughly rattling our taste-buds.

Everything requires evolution. Why? So that it can keep pace with the changing demands of this world. 2016 sees another one of Samsung’s smartphones’ evolve and we’re pleased to see that Samsung is paying special attention to all sorts of price brackets as not everyone in the world can afford flagships or mid-ranged smartphones.

Considering the average financial might of a user in our country, this is welcome news. So, to aid our users with making the right choices while going for new smartphones, here’s a comparison of the Samsung Galaxy J2 2016 and the Galaxy J2.

Build quality

Both the Galaxy J2 and J2 2016 are meant to target the lower range of smartphones which automatically brings with it some easy to guess build materials. Let’s start off with the 2016 model.

The J2 2016’s back is built entirely out of plastic with a thin metal frame separating both the front and back. The plastic feels normal to touch but is reportedly strong. Its back provides the platform for its primary camera and what Samsung calls a smart LED to sit on.

This smart LED completely encircles the primary camera and is directly associated with notifications from the built-in Android v6.0.1 Marshmallow as well as any app you install from the Google Play Store. It is 8mm at its thickest which should be considered okay.

The Galaxy J2 cannot be said off as an altogether different piece of the puzzle. It features similar build materials with the plastic back, glass front panel and a thin metallic frame separating the two from any conflict. However, it does not feature the smart LED its successor supports and with an 8.4mm width, we’ve just pointed out the two biggest differences between the gentlemen.

Both the smartphones target the lower end of the budget category which is why nothing such as glass panels or metallic build will be the ones separating the two. The J2 packed a thicker waist while also no smart LED. The J2 2016 spent some time in the gym and came up with a comparatively thinner waist out of the box and also a smart LED that mark its little improvements over the older J2.

Display

While the build quality did not see much of a difference between the two smartphones, the display features some significant differences. The Galaxy J2 2016 features a 5.0 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 294ppi pixel density. This results in a sharper 720p resolution and it also supports multi-touch technology. Last but not the least, the Galaxy J2 2016’s display covers 68.1% of the smartphone’s front area.

The Galaxy J2 on the other hand features a 4.7 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 234ppi pixel density. This translates into a rather disappointing 540p resolution which in all fairness is now an obsolete quantity. It supports multi-touch though while its screen covers 64.7% of the smartphone’s front panel.

As the aforementioned features suggest, the J2 2016 easily packs a major upgrade on its older sibling because of much better display in all aspects. The J2 came about with an unimpressive 540p resolution and a smaller display. The J2 2016 improves the resolution to a respectable amount while also, increasing the display size to a more adequate quantity.

Cameras

Samsung has always done commendably with its cameras and fingers crossed, we’re hopeful that the Galaxy J2 and J2 2016 will live up to that plate.

The J2 features a 5 megapixel primary camera with an LED flash while its secondary camera holds a disappointing 2 megapixel sensor. The J2 2016 on the other hand features buffed-up cameras. Its primary camera features an 8 megapixel sensor while its selfie camera shelters a satisfactory 5 megapixel sensor. Both the primary cameras contain customary features such as touch-focus, face-detection etc. while the J2 2016’s primary camera also features HDR and panorama shooting capability as well.

The J2 2016’s both cameras feature larger pixels than the Galaxy J2. Overall, the camera sensors are the biggest difference that separate the two smartphones though, both do not feature any special built-in camera features.

Performance and hardware

The internal hardware of the two also sees some significant differences. The Galaxy J2 2016 features a 1.5 GHz Quad-Core Cortex-A7 processor with an additional 1.5GB of RAM which isn’t enough to smoothly run the built-in Android v6.0.1 Marshmallow. Its internal storage banks at 8GB which can be expanded through the external memory card slot.

The J2 on the other hand features a 1.3 GHz Quad-Core Cortex-A7 processor with 1GB of RAM. Definitely inadequate to run the built-in Android v5.1.1 Lollipop. Its internal storage stands at 8GB though it can be expanded further as well. Both the J2 and J2 2016 feature different chipsets and different GPU.

As the specs suggest, one can easily differentiate what upgrades the J2 2016 brings upon its predecessor. Its increased RAM and more clock-speed can be spotted glowing in the paragraph above.

So with that we reach the end of our comparison. The clear winner in the end is the J2 2016 as it outsmarts the J2 from all angles. Do you agree with our comparison or you’d like a stand-off between some other smartphones? Let us know in the comments below.
