We all know about Samsung’s ‘Edge’ smartphones and what they’re all about. If you don’t, they’re a more expensive variant of their simple counterpart with a few differences between them. The most notable difference between the two are their displays; the Edge smartphones feature a curved edge screen while the simple one features a plain display.
A major argument when it comes to curved edge smartphones is whether they’re worth the extra cash. In our country, the Galaxy and Note Edge variant is nearly 10,000 rupees more expensive than the simple one which makes one consider their options very seriously.
However, if you’ve set your heart on going for an edge display smartphone, don’t be alarmed as PriceOye is here to guide you via some astute comparisons between some of the very best edge smartphones in the business; we’re talking about the latest Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and its predecessor, the Galaxy S6 Edge. Let’s dissect what the two smartphones are about other than their displays.
Display and build quality
We’ll first talk about the most sought after feature of the Edge smartphones a.k.a they’re curved edge displays.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge features a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED capacitive curved edge touchscreen with 534ppi pixel density. This brings a crisp 1440p resolution to the plate that is considered to be one of the best displays of 2016. The curved edge touchscreen covers a respectable 76.1% area of the smartphone’s front meaning thinner bezels and more meaningful material.
Its dimensions are very good indeed and at a 7.7mm width, one should have no complaints. This is because the S7 Edge features dust and waterproofing. This always comes at a cost and that is a little bit of extra fat around its belly. Regarding its build materials, it comprises of glass panels on the front and back protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 4. It weighs in at 157g while also supports the new Always On display technology.
The Galaxy S6 Edge on the other hand features a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED curved edge capacitive touchscreen with 577ppi pixel density. This stunning amount of pixel density further brings along with it a splendid 1440p HD resolution that is sure to take your breath away. Its display covers 71% area of the smartphone’s front which is a tad less in our opinion.
Its dimensions are one of its strongest features as it comes in with a slender 7mm waist. It weighs in at an athletic 132g which is all possible due to the fact that it does not support dust and waterproofing. It comprises of similar build materials and design to the Galaxy S7 Edge with two polished glass panels at the front and back protected by the reliable Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
Conclusion: the Galaxy S7 edge is a definite upgrade on the Galaxy S6 Edge. While they feature almost similar build quality, the S7 Edge features waterproofing and a larger display compared to the S6 Edge. The S7 Edge features a thicker waist and lesser pixel density than its counterpart. The extra thickness is down to the waterproofing while the so called less pixel density is still more than enough to provide 1440p resolution.
Pricing
With regards to their pricing, you can find the Galaxy S7 Edge’s price and also the Galaxy S6 Edge’s price on our website. Pricing is one of the most important factors that drive our aspirations with regards to any gadget we intend to buy as in Pakistan, pricing changes by thousands of rupees although they’re just a hundred or so US dollars in the west. The S7 Edge is always bound to be more expensive than the S6 Edge as it was released a year earlier.
They mostly start with high prices (like Apple iPhones) but unlike the Cupertino giants’s flagship, its prices see sharper decline and it’ll be advisable to wait for around 2 months after its release to enjoy up to more than 12,000 rupees in decreased prices.
Both the smartphones are good value for money and both have seen different time spans in the market for us to compare them on their prices. We’ll leave this up to you but don’t worry, which ever one you’ll go for won’t let you down as both are Samsung’s premium flagship devices.
Camera
The Galaxy S6 Edge’s camera was one of the best of its time. Likewise, similar things are said of the S7 Edge’s camera. Speaking in numbers, the S6 Edge features a 16 megapixel sensor with OIS. Its selfie camera features a 5 megapixel sensor. Personally tried and tested by us, the S6 Edge’s cameras worked perfectly in different lighting conditions and we were thoroughly impressed by its snapping prowess.
The Galaxy S7 Edge’s camera features a 12 dual-pixel sensor with OIS and phase detection. Its selfie camera features a 5 megapixel sensor. These two have received some tremendous responses thus far especially when it comes to snapping in extremely low-light conditions. Nothing surprising at all though as Samsung has always done justice with its cameras.
Conclusion: The S7 Edge definitely features a better camera than the S6 Edge as it features newer and improved dual-pixel technology. Some people will argue that the S6 Edge features more megapixels but we’ll reiterate that bigger megapixels aren’t what that matters most. The HTC M8 cemented its camera prowess with just a 4 Ultra Pixel sensor. It’s the technology that matters and the S7 Edge houses exactly that in its two cameras.
Performance and hardware
Both the Galaxies feature supreme processing power that provides 100% lag free user experience. The Galaxy S7 Edge features a Quad-Core plus Octa-Core processor with 4GB of RAM which is ample processing power. It is marketed in 32 and 64GB internal storage models with an external memory card slot. A responsive fingerprint sensor, Quick Charge 2.0 and a large 3600 mAh battery which provides superb battery life are its other crowning features.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge features an Octa-Core processor with an additional 3GB of RAM. This amount is as strong in reality as it seems on paper so relax and just let the S6 Edge do the talking. It is marketed in 3 variants namely 32, 64 and 128GB models with no external storage card slots. Other than that, it features a good fingerprint sensor while we do have our reservations about its 2600 mAh battery.
Conclusion: The S7 Edge improved greatly upon some features of its predecessor which include a much larger battery, more RAM and Quick Charge; things which the S6 Edge doesn’t offer. Performance-wise, both the smartphones perform superbly but the S7 Edge with more RAM and added cores is a tad faster. Although, you won’t really be able to tell the difference!
The verdict: upgrade!
A comprehensive comparison between the two has yielded us a clear winner; the Galaxy S7 Edge. Performance-wise, they’re both really good and you don’t generally feel much of a difference despite the S7 Edge featuring more RAM. However, dust and waterproofing, larger display and its dual-pixel primary camera were simply too good to ignore which crowns the S7 Edge a worthy winner of this particular comparison. Feedback, as always, is welcome.
