Samsung Galaxy S7 vs. S7 Edge: what’s the difference?

Galaxy S7 vs S7 edge Pakistan

Smartphones are seeing tremendous improvements on a daily basis. Features which were deemed unrealistic before are now within the realms of normality. This is primarily down to the technological revamp the world has witnessed in the last few years or so and one can say that Samsung has been one of its greatest beneficiaries.

The South Korean giants are one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world. Their reputation and name knows no boundaries because of the fact that they don’t know when to stop. After inculcating numerous new technologies into their smartphones, they can be considered as the pioneers of some features which include the world’s first curved screen displays.

Samsung markets these smartphones with the name “Edge” concatenated with the original name. They mostly contain near similar specifications to their simpler counterparts but we have seen one or two major differences between the two as well. This has prompted us to a draw a line between Samsung’s latest flagships, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, so that you can easily differentiate between the two not just based on their different screen shapes. Buckle-up and let’s go!

Body and Display

The Galaxy S7 Edge features a beautiful body that mimics some of the very best Victoria’s Secret models out there. It features two glossy front and back panels that are just amazing to touch. They’re very well polished, well finished and the front panel curves beautifully into its edges.

Its display and back panel feature Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. Speaking of its display, it features a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 534ppi pixel density. The result; a 1440p HD resolution which surely makes for one of the best displays out there in the market. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S7 Edge’s display is being touted as the best of 2016.

Its dimensions are pretty neat and its 7.7mm at its thickest which is quite thin for a curved screen smartphone. Other than that, its beautiful curved edge screen covers more than three-quarters of its front. It also supports dust and waterproofing which is the logical reason behind the new flagship being nearly a full millimeter thicker than its predecessor, the Galaxy S6 Edge. It weighs in at 157g which is respectable in our eyes, if not the best.

The Galaxy S7 on the other hand features 100% similar build materials. From Corning Gorilla Glass 4 to glossy panels, everything is nearly the same. The major differences between the two are of course their displays. The Galaxy S7 features a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 577ppi pixel density. This amount of pixel density is among the highest in the world and it calmly brings home a 1440p HD resolution as well.

It is 7.9mm at its thickest which is also pretty nifty for a smartphone and like the Edge, it features dust and waterproofing as well. It weighs in at 152g which is 5g lesser than its Edge variant.

Nothing really separates the two smartphones apart from their displays. The Galaxy S7 might feature more pixel density but the S7 Edge shelters a larger curved edge display. Both bring home the same resolution so the S7’s pixel density loses some of its importance. Quite surprisingly, the S7 Edge is thinner than the normal S7 too!

Cameras

Both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge feature 100% similar cameras. Both of the smartphones contain arguably one of the best smartphone cameras ever, let alone of 2016. Both feature a 12 megapixel primary camera with some meaty features that include phase detection and OIS. The primary camera is known to perform extremely well in low lighting conditions which further adds to the credibility of Samsung’s brilliant cameras.

Both the selfie cameras feature a 5 megapixel sensor which seems small and like us, you would had anticipated an 8 megapixel sensor but we’re optimistic about its performance. It probably won’t let you down.

Both the cameras are exactly the same, so it makes for a win-win situation.

Performance and hardware

Samsung received some over the top ear bashing when the Galaxy S5 came along. This was mostly down to two reasons; the S5 was fat and it lagged a lot. These two were too much to get-over for even the most die-hard of Samsung’s followers so the South Korean giants sought to make amends in their next release and boy did they pull it off.

That has been duly carried on to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Both the smartphones feature Octa-Core and Quad-Core processors with an additional 4GB of RAM. This sheer amount of processing power is every bit as fast as it seems on paper which is way more than enough to smoothly run the built-in Android Marshmallow. This means no-lag and no waiting for apps to open. Prepare to live your life in the fast lane. It remains to be seen whether these two will receive update to the Android Nougat which in all fairness they should.

One major difference between the two smartphones’ software is the smart Edge feature the S7 Edge has in store. The curved Edge screen allows a little bit more functionality compared to the normal S7 and we’re sure to see this feature being used to greater effect in the future.

The smartphones also feature loads of other intelligent features that include a responsive fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the home button, Quick Charge 2.0 technology known to charge 60% battery within 30 minutes, updated S-Voice and a non-removable 3000 mAh battery which should be adequate enough to provide one day’s worth of smartphone usage.

Both the smartphones are marketed in two variants with the cheaper being the 32GB internal storage variant while the more expensive one being the 64GB variant. Both contain an external card slot in-case you ever run out of storage space. Nothing much to analyze here as both the smartphones provide similar and streamlined processing power.

Verdict

The verdict regarding these two smartphones comes completely down to the fact if you think the S7 Edge is worth splashing some extra cash for.

While we firmly believe that Edge phones simply add to the aesthetics of smartphones and make them look even better, we’re also of the opinion that splashing an extra 10,000 rupees is bonkers considering you get something that is nearly similar to it. So, we’d give the winners award to the Galaxy S7 as it is more value for money and nearly offers everything, apart from the curved edge screen, that the S7 Edge does. The result is of course based on the finest of margins.

However, if you’ve got some extra cash up your sleeves, there’s no shame in going for the Galaxy S7 Edge because it is undoubtedly the more beautiful of the two. Did you find this comparison useful? Don’t forget to let us know what you feel.
